Good Or Bad: JAMB To Stop The Use Of NIN For UTME/DE Registration

Last year, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) introduced the use of NIN for the registration of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)/Direct Entry (DE). The idea did not work as planned which led to the suspension of its use. One year after, it seems JAMB and other bodies involved are still yet to get it right. Should JAMB scrap the use of NIN for UTME/DE registration? The difficulties being experienced by prospective candidates are testimonies to this. It seems this is the worst outing being recorded by JAMB since the adoption of the USSD system in its registration. Meanwhile, according to premium times, a highly placed source in the agency has stated that the best solution would have been to waive the use of NIN for candidates. “If we do that, I can assure you that in two days the whole exercise would be completed. But we cannot because the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy was impressed by our efforts and has even written appreciation to our supervising ministry and also to the federal executive council. So we cannot backtrack on that for now,” the source said. We understand that the use of NIN will help to a large extent in curbing malpractice especially the issue of impersonation but at the moment, for many of the candidates who have been unable to process their registration due to NIN-related issues, the disadvantage outweighs the advantage.
