| FRESH HOPE: FG Says State, Private Schools’ Graduating Pupils Can Sit For WASSCE |
The federal government said it is the prerogative of state-owned and private schools to determine whether its graduating pupils will sit for Junior and Senior West African Examinations, WAEC, scheduled for August 4 to September 5.
The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, had proclaimed that the federal government was not disposed to pupils sitting for WAEC on the scheduled date, saying those of unity schools would not be part of it, and urging state governments to take a cue from it.
Adamu’s statement was not in sync with that of Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba earlier made, to the effect that graduating pupils would resume and sit for the papers.
The policy summersault was greeted by mixed reactions and generating confusion.
On Monday at the routine Presidential Taskforce press briefing, Nwajiuba said the position of federal government on the nagging issue was clear explaining that the latter has no control over state and private schools.

His word: “He (Adamu) was only giving what he has received which was the timetable as published by WAEC and advised that this period, from now till when the (WASCCE) examination will take place sometime in August, anybody who wanted to use the schools would have to follow the guidelines.
“He said however that he is not in charge of private schools and schools under the concurrent list and power have therefore been devolved to sub-nationals who can take a decision on their state-owned schools, whether they can participate in the WAEC examinations or not.”
